Our ThinkAbout Risk Assessment and ThinkAbout Safety Programs are ultimately aimed at Loss Control, loss due personal injury and/or loss due to property damage. We use the the Team Think model indicated by the graphic opposite  to bring together the aspects of Loss Control to those in your organisation that can make the biggest impact, your people.

In 1969, a landmark study was conducted of over 1,750,00 accidents reported by 297 companies in 21 different industrial groups. This, in conjunction with 4,000 hours of confidential interviews by trained supervisors, revealed a very interesting ratio of serious injuries to minor injuries, property damage accidents, and near misses. This model can be adapted to consider Safety and Health events generally. See figure 1.

This model indicates quite clearly how unwise it is to direct our major effort at the relatively few events resulting in serious or disabling injury when there are so many significant opportunities that provide a much larger basis for more effective control of accidental losses.

The Effects of Loss

The result of accidents is loss. The most obvious loss from accidents is personal injury or illness and all the costs associated with it. The first concern in Safety & Health  management is the protection or people from pain and suffering; however, organisations cannot ignore the significant financial impact of loss on the organisation.

Somewhat less obvious is the property damage resulting from accidents, although in most cases, property damage resulting from accidents, far exceed the costs of injuries. Even less obvious are the losses of process interruption, production delays, and missed opportunities. Add to these the costs associated with investigation, retraining, paperwork, overtime, etc., and the true effect of loss on the organisation starts to become clearer.

Figure 3 illustrates the results of studies on the costs of loss. Costs associated with injury, essentially workers’ compensation and other medical costs, are significant, but are only the tip of the iceberg. The vast majority of costs are below the waterline and consist of property damage, downtime and administrative costs amongst others.
