What
is the HBDI?
The
Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) is an instrument that
measures our preferred ways and modes of thinking and learning.
Origin
of the HBDI
HBDI
was developed by Ned Herrmann, a physicist, and is based on
his four-quadrant whole-brain model.
He began his research in the 1970's as a result of his
personal interest in trying to understand the nature and source of
creativity.
"Ned
Herrmann created and developed the Herrmann Brain Dominance
Instrument (HBDI) while he was a manager at General Electric.
Starting his research with large groups within GE, he
expanded it over 20 years through tens of thousands of surveys and
has validated the data with prominent psychometric research
institutions, including the Educational Testing Service.
The
HBDI measures a person's preference both for right-brained or
left-brained thinking and for conceptual or experiential thinking.
Different preferences combine into
four distinct quadrants as illustrated
by the figure below

Validation
of the HBDI
The
HBDI is based on scientific research and has been validated by
Victor Bunderson, head of research management for Educational
Testing Services in the
USA
.
During the past 15 years, additional validation has come from
more than 60 doctoral dissertations based on the HBDI (and the whole
brain concept). To date,
over two million individuals world wide, have completed the HBDI.
